My first QL repair. A friend asked me to look at this old 80s beastie, saying he could not get a picture on screen. Well it sort of works, but only gives the choice of F keys to choose between Monitor or TV. These keys failed to work, as did any other key, so it turned out to be a faulty keyboard membrane, essentially, the plastic had failed where the ribbon bends over. Luckily new replacements are available - see the video for details - and it was easy to replace it. There were problems making this video because during the membrane ordering and delivery time, I had been messing with some of the settings of OBS, the capture software I use, and I had inadvertently set it to automatically record 30 seconds each time RECORD was clicked. I didn't notice that the recording had stopped so a lot of what I thought I had recorded was lost. What you didn't get to see was the reassembly with the new membrane, the testing of the keyboard - all keys work fine, the loading of the Abacus software. It didn't load due to dirty heads of the microdrive and the foam pad in the drive cartridge itself coming loose. I cleaned the heads, reglued the pad and got the software loading correctly. Phew. So, with apologies for a recording not of all the job, I hope it's enough to entertain and inform about this old computer.
